The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially selected the former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate to run alongside His Excellency Atiku Abubakar in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. The decision follows extensive high-level consultations involving party leadership, coalition partners, civil society groups, and stakeholders from all six geopolitical zones across Nigeria.

According to the party, Amaechi’s nomination stems directly from the recently concluded ADC presidential primaries, in which the former Rivers State governor finished as the runner-up. His strong showing during the internal polls demonstrated a resilient, cross-regional appeal that the party aims to leverage to secure victory at the national polls.

A Ticket Built on Public Service Records

In a press statement confirming the selection, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasized that the joint Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents far more than a routine electoral alignment. It is structured as a governance-first partnership designed to introduce stability, national reach, and administrative capability to the current political landscape.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” Abdullahi stated.

The party highlighted Amaechi’s extensive legislative and executive track record as a primary asset for the campaign. Having served as one of the longest-tenured Speakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a two-term Governor of Rivers State, and later as the Minister of Transportation, the ADC notes that few contemporary political actors possess such balanced experience across different tiers of democratic governance.

Balancing the Regional and Generational Grid

Beyond administrative experience, the selection of Amaechi provides a calculated geopolitical balance to Atiku’s candidacy. By pairing a prominent political figure from the South-South region with a veteran northern statesman, the ADC is intentionally positioning itself as a genuinely unified, pan-Nigerian alternative capable of cutting across long-standing regional, ethnic, and traditional divides.

The opposition party believes this combined background in economic management, public administration, and grassroots party organization will offer a compelling option for an electorate increasingly demanding visible governance results, job creation, and enhanced national security.

Mobilizing the Opposition Coalition

As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, the ADC leadership expressed firm confidence that the new ticket will inject fresh momentum into its expanding political coalition. The party asserts that it is fully prepared to govern from day one and has set up structures to mobilize voter bases nationwide.

To convert this momentum into electoral success, the national leadership has issued an open call to all party members, youth networks, women’s organizations, and civil society groups to align with the newly formed campaign structure. The party maintains that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket serves as an active platform for national renewal, engineered specifically to restore public trust in federal governance.
