The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set the wheels of Nigeria’s next democratic transition in motion, announcing February 20, 2027, as the date for the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
In a press conference held Friday at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, unveiled the formal Timetable and Schedule of Activities. The announcement marks the start of the statutory countdown to the 2027 General Elections, which will also see governorship and state assembly polls take place on March 6, 2027.
Addressing journalists, Prof. Amupitan characterized the early release of the election dates as a vital step toward ensuring a transparent and orderly process.
“The release of this timetable is a significant milestone in our democratic journey,” Amupitan stated. “It is a constitutional obligation aimed at consolidating Nigeria’s democracy and providing all stakeholders from political parties to security agencies the clarity required for effective planning.”
Key Election Dates:
-
Presidential & National Assembly: February 20, 2027
-
Governorship & State Houses of Assembly: March 6, 2027
The 2027 cycle will determine the next President and Vice President, as well as representatives for the Senate and the House of Representatives. While most states will participate in the governorship elections, eight states, Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo, and Osun will not join the March 6 governorship polls due to their off-cycle election calendars.
Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the Commission is acting in strict accordance with the 1999 Constitution and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022. The law mandates that the Notice of Election be published no later than 360 days before the commencement of the polls.
By releasing the schedule a full year in advance of the statutory deadline, the Commission aims to mitigate logistical bottlenecks and allow for a more robust period of voter registration and party primaries.
