20 Years of Rot: Inside the Mud Classrooms of Umuduru, Imo State

In a shocking display of educational neglect in 2026, Central School Orji in the Umuduru Community of Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State, remains a crumbling relic of mud walls and leaking zinc roofs.

Despite decades of purported government investment in education, the school has been abandoned for over 20 years, forcing children to seek an education in structures that are on the verge of total collapse.

A recent investigative visit by Tracka revealed a harrowing environment where pupils are subjected to life-threatening conditions. The classrooms, built decades ago through community self-help efforts, feature deep structural cracks and lack ceilings. When it rains, the “learning” stops as water pours directly onto the children, leaving both students and teachers drenched and shivering in a sodden environment.

Misplaced Priorities and Structural Failure

The crisis at Central School Orji is compounded by what observers describe as a bizarre lack of administrative oversight. While the school lacks a safe building, reports indicate that furniture was recently supplied to the site leaving desks sitting in a roofless mud hall.

With no secure facilities, the Headmistress lacks a functional office, and vital school records are stored at the private residence of the village head to prevent them from being destroyed by the elements.

“The entire school structure is in a terrible and unsafe condition,” a representative stated during the site assessment. “Children are seen sitting on bare dusty floors, while some even lie down or sleep during classes because there are no proper desks or chairs. This is a clear case of misplaced priorities.”

A Call for Urgent Intervention

The irony of the situation is not lost on the local residents, who noted that the dilapidated facility is regularly used as a polling unit during election cycles. Despite its role in the democratic process, the school has received zero structural support from the state. Currently, the pupils are forced to defecate in nearby bushes due to a total lack of toilet facilities, while the premises remain overgrown with dangerous weeds.

Community members, exhausted by government inaction, are once again attempting to crowdfund for new classroom blocks to prevent a potential tragedy. However, the scale of the decay demands immediate state-level action. Advocates are now calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma and the Imo State Ministry of Education to shut down the dangerous site and commence the immediate construction of a modern, dignified learning facility for the children of Umuduru.
